ROADMAP
Intro
Welcome to Boltgun 2, the second Warhammer 40K game in the Boltgun series. Very much like the first game, it is a classic retro-style 3D shooter.
Both the gameplay and the trophy list are very similar to the other games in this sub-genre of shooter. Every level is straightforward: get to the end while killing enemies along the way. You will also have to find keys (all story-related) to advance through some levels. Each level also holds some very well hidden collectibles, and while there are not many per level, there are a lot of levels, which brings the total to just over 200 collectibles. There are only two types of collectibles: 33 Seals for the
Purification Complete trophy and 174 Secrets for the
Pathfinder trophy. You can treat them the same when looking for them, since both just need to be found and picked up, though the Secrets also give you a temporary buff.
None of the collectibles are missable, since you can replay any level you have finished through the Level Select option in the menu.
You will need at least 2 playthroughs, for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is the 2 characters you can play the game with. At the start of the game you pick a character and then play through the campaign as them. Each one has their own playstyle and abilities, but you will need to finish the game with both of them for the
For Ultramar! and
Faith and Fury trophies. The campaign is exactly the same for both as far as the levels go.
The second reason is that there are 3 points in the campaign where you have to pick one of two paths. Each path has its own 3 or 4 levels before the two rejoin the main route. So during your first playthrough pick whichever paths you like, but make sure that during your second playthrough you pick the other 3 paths while using the other character. It is not the end of the world if you do not, though: the Unlock All Levels option in the Accessibility menu puts every level from every path into the Level Select menu. Don't worry if you don't pick up all the collectibles the first time you play a level, since every level you finish gets added to the Level Select menu, where you can clean up the collectibles. For the collectible trophies to pop you must have every collectible in each of the 33 levels with at least one of the two characters (you can keep track of this in the Level Select menu). Not every level needs to be done with the same character: you could have half of the levels completed with all collectibles by one character and the other half by the other. Once you finish a level with either character, it becomes available to both characters through Level Select anyway. Even so, we still recommend clearing up the Path B collectibles through Level Select with the Path A character (or whichever character has the most collectibles), or at least the Seals, since there is a bug with a small chance of preventing the
Purification Complete trophy from unlocking if the Seals are not all obtained with the same character. Just make sure you get to the end of the level after finding new collectibles, so that the level's total updates.
Apart from that, one of the two playthroughs must be done on Exterminatus difficulty (the hardest) for the
Weapon of the Emperor trophy, but thanks to the Accessibility menu letting you turn on Invulnerability and Infinite Ammo, that playthrough is a breeze anyway.
After that there is literally just 1 miscellaneous trophy,
Chaos Filth, which can be done at any time.
Step 1. Path A + Character A + Collectibles.
For this playthrough, select the Exterminatus difficulty, turn on the Invulnerability and Infinite Ammo options in the Accessibility menu and play as whichever of the two characters you prefer, while following our Collectibles guide. During this playthrough you are free to take whichever story paths you like.
Step 2. Path B + Character B.
Now it is time to play through the game with the other character. Make sure you pick the opposite paths to the ones you took on your first playthrough, to unlock those levels in Level Select. If you take a wrong turn, it is not the end of the world: the Unlock All Levels option in the Accessibility menu puts every level from every path into the Level Select menu. During this playthrough, don't worry about collectibles, even on the new levels: you can go back and finish them off in Level Select later. There is a small chance of a bug with the Seals that prevents the trophy from popping if they are not all collected with the same character, so it is best to clean them up afterwards in Level Select with your first character, who already has around 80% of the collectibles. You can also select the Low difficulty for this playthrough so the enemies have a lot less HP, and then speedrun the whole campaign in around 2 hours or less.
Step 3. Path B Collectibles.
Now that all levels are available in Level Select, use our Collectibles guide to clean up what is left. As we said in the intro, you do not need every collectible in the game with the same character, as long as one of the two characters has every collectible in each level. However, if you want to play it safe, we recommend doing the Path B collectibles with the character from your first playthrough, who already has around 80% of the collectibles anyway. The reason is that while we can confirm the
Pathfinder trophy popped straight away with different levels at 100% with different characters, the
Purification Complete trophy (for the Seals) acted a bit strange and buggy during our time with the game, so we cannot confirm it will pop when the levels are divided between the two characters. As mentioned before, also make sure you reach the end of the level after getting new collectibles, so the total updates and counts. This is also when the trophies pop, not when you pick up the final collectible.
Step 4. Miscellaneous Trophy
After the collectibles and the max difficulty run, the only trophy you will have left is
Chaos Filth. It is easily obtained by pressing to taunt a Nurgling. Check the trophy guide below for details.
TROPHY GUIDE
Complete all other trophies
Unlocked once you earn all other trophies.
Complete The Arkifane Emerges chapter in the campaign
Story-related. Unmissable.
Complete the planet Novoza in the campaign
Story-related. Unmissable.
Complete the planet Amara Mors in the campaign
Story-related. Unmissable.
Complete the planet Erythine or the moon Trephine in the campaign
Story-related. Unmissable. These are the last planets of the campaign, but they are also one of the path splits, so you will only visit one of them per playthrough depending on the path you pick. The trophy unlocks either way.
Complete a daring ambush on a powerful enemy vessel
Story-related. Unmissable.
Complete the campaign as Malum
Unlocked once you finish the campaign as Malum, one of the two characters you can play through the game with.
Complete the campaign as Nyra
Unlocked once you finish the campaign as Nyra, one of the two characters you can play through the game with.
Complete the campaign on Low difficulty
Unlocked after finishing the campaign on Low difficulty or higher.
Complete the campaign on Medium difficulty
Unlocked after finishing the campaign on Medium difficulty or higher.
Complete the campaign on Hard difficulty
Unlocked after finishing the campaign on Hard difficulty or higher.
Complete the campaign on Exterminatus difficulty
Unlocked after finishing the campaign on Exterminatus, the hardest difficulty. As mentioned in the roadmap, turning on Invulnerability and Infinite Ammo in the Accessibility menu makes this a breeze.
Complete every level in the game
This trophy only unlocks once you have finished every level in the game at least once. That means finishing both paths at each of the 3 splits in the campaign, which takes 2 playthroughs. Make sure you pick the opposite paths on your second playthrough to the ones you took on your first.
Find every Purity Seal in the game
Find all 33 Seals. There is one Seal in each of the 33 levels. None are missable, and they can all be collected through Level Select. There is a small chance the trophy will not pop if the Seals are split between the two characters, so we recommend collecting them all with the same character (see the roadmap).
Find every Secret in the game
Find all 174 Secrets. These are hidden spots found throughout the levels, and each one gives you a temporary buff when picked up. None are missable, and they can all be collected through Level Select.
Taunt a Nurgling
Nurglings are small creatures that can be found in many levels of the game. To taunt one, simply press next to it. If you still don't have this trophy after earning the other trophies, you can find a Nurgling close to the start of the Rigged To Blow level, in the room where you pick up the red key needed to advance.
