If you liked Ghost of Tsushima, you’re going to like Ghost of Yotei. It’s basically a bigger, better version of that game, more to explore, smoother systems, and a world that’s just stunning to look at. The devs clearly decided not to reinvent the wheel this time. Unlike games like Silent Hill f that took some big swings, Yotei plays it safe. But honestly, that’s fine when the foundation’s this solid.
You play as Atsu, a revenge-driven warrior tracking down the Yotei Six, the people who wiped out her family when she was a kid. The story’s decent, with a few twists and interesting side characters, but it’s not quite as memorable as Tsushima’s. It’s also long, around 15 hours just for the main story, and that’s without touching the side stuff.
Now, the open world is where Yotei really shines. It’s gorgeous, full of detail, and absolutely packed with things to do. Side quests are everywhere, some are even more interesting than the main story, you’ve got bounties, foxes to help, and collectibles all over the place. The best part is that exploration actually feels rewarding. The game doesn’t hold your hand as much as Tsushima did. Some bounties make you figure things out yourself, like reading notes, wearing certain armour, or playing a specific song to trigger something. It’s small stuff, but it makes the world feel alive. And thanks to the PS5, fast travel is basically instant, which makes wandering around even better.
The combat hits that sweet spot between simple and satisfying. It has some very light RPG elements, but it’s not super deep, but it’s fun, especially on higher difficulties where you need to switch weapons to counter certain enemies. It’s built around that rock-paper-scissors idea, and while there aren’t tons of weapons, each one has a clear purpose. The skill tree gives you some nice upgrades, like being able to use a pistol during standoffs. My only gripe is that it can start to feel repetitive. A lot of the bosses blur together, and enemy variety isn’t great.
At the end of the day, Ghost of Yotei is a beautiful, safe upgrade to Tsushima. It’s one of the best open worlds you’ll play this year. I just wish it had taken a few more risks instead of sticking so close to the old formula.
