Masters are strong humanoid opponents. Defeating them all will get you the A God Among Men trophy. There are 13 Masters and none are missable.
1572 CE - Warring States
Master #1. Found on a small island in the Lake Sanaru region. You will need to advance the story to get the correct Spirit to cross the Spirit Vein and reach the island.
Master #2. Found in the Lake Hamana region.
Master #3. Found in the Iinoya region. To get reach this Master and get him to spawn you will have to finish the Those Who Live In The Shadows side quest. This side quest can also be found in the Iinoya region.
Master #4. Found in a house in the Futamata region.
1190 CE - Heian
Master #5. Found in the Kamo Village region. You will first have to finish the Follow The Soldier’s Shadow side quest.
Master #6. Found in the Nishiichi region. You will need to use the Spirit Vein to reach him. You will have to advance the story and finish the “Return To Edo” region to get the correct Spirit.
Master #7. Found in the Hachijo region. You can only fight this Master during the The Box’s Guardian side quest found in this same region.
Master #8. Found in the Awawa no Tsuji region. You will have to use the Spirit Vein to the right to reach him.

1864 CE - Bakumatsu
Master #9. Found in the Shijo region.
Master #10. Found in the Gion region.
Master #11. Found in the Nijo Castle region.
Master #12. Found in the Kyoto Imperial Palace region.
Master #13. Found in the Kyoto Imperial Palace region.
